Connectivity is on its way!The District of Mackenzie is partnering with Internet Service Provider CityWest to bring high speed fibre-optic connectivity to Mackenzie. CityWest is a municipally owned telecommunications company that provides Internet, telephone, and television services. CityWest was founded in Prince Rupert more than 100 years ago and has been providing reliable telecommunication services across British Columbia since that time.Funding from the Federal government of $3,116,795 will cover the cost of high-speed internet to 1208 households. The remaining 720 homes located in the townsite will be funded by the partnership between the District of Mackenzie and CityWest, who will equally share the required additional investment of $2.2 million (at $1.1 million each). This additional funding of $2.2 million is required to provide high speed service to the 720 homes who were identified ineligible. CityWest and the District of Mackenzie are working on a plan to extend fibre services to the Gantahaz Lake subdivision.The partnership agreement between the District of Mackenzie and CityWest will see a portion of profits from services in Mackenzie shared with the District and invested back into the community!The townsite project will begin this Spring, with an anticipated completion by the end of 2024!Sign-up for *FREE* DropTo access services, you will require an underground &quot;drop&quot; from the main fibre line. Mackenzie Spring Photo Contest 2024

Each year, the District develops an annual budget that outlines how tax dollars are invested in the community. You are invited to provide input on the 2024 budget through the survey and map tools below. The results of the survey will be reviewed by staff and Council and used as an information tool in the decision-making process for the 2024 budget. A &quot;What We Heard Report&quot; will be produced and shared publicly following the close of the survey.

2024 Budget

This project will allow the District of Mackenzie to continue providing ice programming for another 30 plus years, reduce overall operating costs, reduce our environmental impact by an estimated 26.8 % and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 159 tonnes annually. Improvements being made to the Mackenzie Recreation: Arena Slab &amp; Underfloor - Replacement<ul><li>Arena Dasher Boards, Glass Shielding, &amp; Building Insulation - Replacement</li><li>HVAC Units, Water Heaters &amp; DDC Integration - Upgrades</li><li>Solar Panels &amp; Heat Recovery System &ndash; New</li></ul> PROJECT TIMELINE The project is slated to begin April 1, 2024 with an estimated completion date of August 28, 2024. During this time, the arena area of the building will be 100% unavailable for safety reasons. All equipment stored in the arena area will need to be removed to avoid damage (including from dust) during the construction period. Staff will post further updates on the District of Mackenzie website, the District and Recreation Services social media channels, and share with the radio station, CHMM 103.5, and Let&rsquo;s Chat Mackenzie as they become available. The District apologizes in advance for inconveniences that arise from this necessary project. BACKGROUND The District of Mackenzie arena ice slab is original and installed in 1974. It&rsquo;s currently 50 years old and the life expectancy of a slab is 30-35 years. Staff are currently experiencing brine leaks that can&rsquo;t be traced, so it&rsquo;s likely happening in the slab itself. The leaks are not a huge issue until they move towards the surface and melt the ice, making the ice surface unplayable. If the slab failed unexpectedly during the season, that ice season and possibly the next would be lost as funding would need to be secured, then planning, and finally construction, which could take several months to years to finalize. The ice surface is an important part of the community in Mackenzie, providing activities during the long winter season and is a social hub. Based on our community&rsquo;s need for a new slab staff began applying for grants. In January 2023, the District was approved for $2,395,753 in grant funding from the <a href="https://www.infrastructure.gc.ca/gicb-bcvi/index-eng.html">Government of Canada&rsquo;s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB)</a> program for the Mackenzie Recreation Centre &ndash; Energy Recovery and Facility Upgrades project, which includes replacing the arena ice slab and boards, and implementing a number of energy efficiency upgrades which will reduce our environmental impact and help reduce costs in maintaining this important piece of infrastructure. Recently, the District received news that the <a href="https://spmtrust.ca/">South Peace Mackenzie Trust</a> has approved a grant for $250,000 that will also go towards this project. BUDGET The original grant application was submitted in 2021. Due to inflation and the increase in construction costs over the last few years, bids for the construction of the project came in higher than originally anticipated. At the March 11, 2024 Council Meeting, the construction project was awarded to Northern Legendary Construction in the amount of $3.1 million. This increased the District&rsquo;s contribution to the project from $598,939 to $863,873. Staff continue to search for additional funds to help offset the costs.
